When winter arrives, your skin often feels it first. Cold mornings, dry inland air, icy winds, indoor heating and hotter showers can all leave the skin feeling tighter, flakier and more reactive than usual. That tightness is often the first sign the seal is compromised, not simply a lack of oil.
Winter skin is not always just “dry skin”. Often, it is a sign that the skin barrier is under pressure, says Dr Alek Nikolic, specialist in aesthetic medicine and owner of SkinMiles.
“Your skin barrier is your protective seal,” he adds. “It helps keep moisture in and irritants out. When that barrier is weakened, the skin becomes more prone to dryness, sensitivity, redness and discomfort.”
What happens to your barrier in winter?
The skin barrier is the outermost layer of the skin. Think of it as a wall. Skin cells are bricks, and lipids such as ceramides are cement holding everything together. When the cement is disrupted, water escapes more easily, and irritants can enter more easily.
Healthy skin naturally loses water through this seal, but in winter the gradient between the body and dry air steepens, so loss increases and the barrier takes longer to rebuild its ceramide, cholesterol and fatty acid cement.
“In winter, the skin is exposed to several barrier stressors at once,” explains Dr Nikolic. “These additional stressors can all increase moisture loss. If you then add strong exfoliating acids, retinoids or harsh cleansers, the skin can become overwhelmed.”
He offers his tips on how to counter the stresses your skin faces this season, with his easy winter skin barrier checklist, along with recommendations of products to use:
1. Switch to a richer moisturising support
If your skin feels tight, rough or uncomfortable, choose a richer moisturiser or balm that helps reinforce the skin barrier and reduce moisture loss:
-
UNCSKIN GlowHydro Cream – for nourishing hydration and a healthier-looking glow.
2. Prioritise hydration, especially at night
Dehydrated skin lacks water, not necessarily oil. This means it can feel tight but still look shiny. Night-time is a good opportunity to support hydration while the skin is recovering.
- SKIN FUNCTIONAL Hydration Juice – for a more complete routine targeting dry and dehydrated skin.
3. Do not pack away your SPF
Winter sun still poses a risk. SPF should stay in your morning routine, even when it is cold or cloudy:
- FILORGA Daily Repair Mineral UV SPF 50 – for daily mineral sun protection.
4. Simplify before you intensify
“When your barrier is compromised, more is not better,” advises Dr Nikolic. “The goal is to restore comfort first. Once the skin is calm and supported, it usually becomes more resilient over time.”
A resilient barrier does more than stop winter tightness. It helps skin hold water, defend against irritants, and tolerate active ingredients without constant flare-ups. The simplest winter strategy is to protect the seal first. Hydrate consistently, keep SPF in your morning routine, choose moisturisers that support ceramides and lipids, and pause anything that stings. Comfort now is what builds strength for the seasons ahead.
Winter-proofing your skin is about giving the barrier what it needs: hydration, protection, richer support where necessary, and a routine your skin can tolerate every day.
