They were able to avoid the gangsterism that plagues the area by devoting themselves to music. They remain committed to unlifting the community in the area and use their fame to regularly hold free concerts and conduct education and anti-drug campaigns. CHANTAL JAX VENTER & NKOSINATHI MAKI Thursday 13 May Comedians Chantal Jax and Nkosinathi Maki will have audiences rolling in the aisles from laughter. Jax, originally from Brakpan in Gauteng, moved to Cape Town after graduating in 2008, but it was not until 2015 that she walked away from her job as a service manager and turned to comedy. Jax describes her humour as “versatile, anecdotal, witty, observational and occasionally dark”. Maki who was born and bred in Cape Town, started out in stand-up comedy in 2011 and was soon running his own comedy gigs. He also achieved national success with his extremely popular one-man show, ‘Gluten Free’. Over the years he has shared a stage with most of South Africa’s top rated comedians and today he, himself, is a sought after comedy host. He puts his success down to an ability to adapt to different audiences. TYE PLATINUM Friday 14 May Tye Platinum grew up in Ravensmead, Cape Town and music provided him with a positive outlet to escape drug abuse and gangsterism which were rife. He also credits his mom for his success as she supported him through events and talent shows. Despite the difficulty of his early career it was after being introduced to classical music, and doing a little research, that his music career took off. SALOME Saturday 15 May Mitchell’s plain diva, Salome Johansen, said turning 40 was a positive thing, especially as she celebrates 10 years of being clean from her addition to tik. Salome grew up listening to 90s international club divas Sybil and Robin S and they have influenced her music. In 2020 she was to have performed on stage with them but this dream was unfortunately upended by the Covid-19 pandemic. WEEK THREE 19 to 22 May CRAIG LUCAS Wednesday 19 May Craig Lucas rose to fame after winning the second season of The Voice South Africa in 2017 with Khan Morbee as his coach. The singer-songwriter from Elsies River was an economics and politics graduate from UCT before his success in the competition set out his new career. His debut album entitled Restless was released in 2017, featuring hits ‘I Said This’ and ‘Smother’. The album received a SAMA nomination in 2018 for Best Pop Album and in 2019 Lucas released his second album, Anti-Sociable. PROJECT COMEDY LIVE Thursday 20 May Lunga Tshuka: Being a Xhosa child growing up in Michell’s Plain from the age of three has given Lunga Tshuka a unique perspective on a culture other than his own, and he used these insights in his comedy routines. He has shared a stage with other comedy greats such as Marc Lottering, Carl Webber, Mel Jones, Kurt Schoonraad, Deep Fried Man, Nik Rabinowitz and Angel Campey. Ambrose Uren Not only is Ambrose Uren funny, he is also energetic and positive. As a comedian he engages his audience through silliness and expressive storytelling. In his comedy shows Ambrose explores his life growing up through post-apartheid, his vision on sustainability and his recent travels. He performed his one-man shows Don’t Google This, and Balanced, to sold to sold out shows. CJ Benson Calvin Benson from Lotus River, better known by his stage name of CJ Benson, names fellow comedians Nick Rabinowitz, Riaad Moosa, Kurt Schoonraad, Loyiso Gola and Stuart Taylor as role models. Benson has previously performed at the internationally acclaimed Grahamstown National Arts Festival. Eugene Mathews Ex taxi driver Nathan Adams honed his comedy sills behind the wheel of his taxi, sharing one liners with his passengers. It wasn’t until a passenger invited Nathan to join him at a comedy show in Long Street that his new idea took root. He got his first break working with Soli Philander on Taxi Radio and has since gone on to perform at the Mother City Comedy Festival. Adams is a natural storyteller who wears his heart on his sleeve and refers to himself and his comedy as flying the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual (LGBTQIA+) flag. FAGRIE ISAACS Friday 21 May Fagrie Isaacs vocal talent was first discovered in the choir at Strandfontein Primary. His popularity grew once he became the lead singer of The Boys, Cape Town’s first ever boy band. After his first solo recording – Wonderlike Liefde van ‘n Ma written by Afrikaans musician Mynie Grove – became a hit he became known as a gifted singer in the Cape Malay Choir scene. Since then Isaacs has gone on to win many choir prizes. His first venture into the Kaapse Klopse was with the Seawinds team, and he received five consecutive first prize wins with the Juvie Boys. Fagrie counts artists like Boys2Men and the Manhattans as his musical influences. NUR ABRAHAMS Saturday 22 May Nur Abrahams has been singing since the age of six and has been a member of successful music groups Limited Edition and JAG. The talented musician has contributed to many hit shows in Cape Town, and this year brings us his second solo production, It's My Time. He has embarked on a new journey to showcase his amazing vocal talent. He received the Baxter Theatre’s Young Inspiring Artist of the Year Award in 2012 and has performed in a host of successful shows, including District 6 The Musical, Vocal Is Lekka, Radio Classics, Slick Swing, Scrooge, Music Alla Kaap (sharing the stage with the late Zayn Adam and Percy Sledge), Vocal Mania, Divos, Remembering the Lux, Kaapse Jol and I am Music. WEEK FOUR 26 to 29 May ANSLIN GYSMAN Wednesday 26 May Singing was always a hobby for Anslin Gysman from Phillipi until he got his break as a backing vocal group with his two friends. His work with The Vocal Associates ignited his passion for music. Since then Gysman has appeared on The Voice SA which solidified his dream of a music career. MY CHILD HAS CANCER TRUST COMEDY FUNDRAISER Thursday 27 May Host: Carl Weber Multi-award winning Carl Weber hails from Bloemfontein. The stand-up comedian has held several one-man shows at comedy clubs and other comedy platforms. Weber, who rates Jerry Seinfield as a comedy genius, describes his job as “ranting, raving and laughing for a living”. Arlene Petersen Stand-up comedian Arlene Petersen has made a name for herself in the industry with her bubbly personality. In her comedy routine Perersen speaks about everyday life problems. Prior to becoming a comedian, she studied public administration which gave her an understanding of the constitution and politics so she draws from her understanding of these and of daily news which she turns into jokes. She calls comedy a form of therapy, the stage as her couch and the audience as her therapist. Ryan Josephs Ryan Josephs has been performing his brand of stand-up comedy since 2018 and shows no signs of slowing down. He has been consistently working Cape Town's underground comedy circuit while being a husband and father to three great kids. A highlight of his journey thus far was his performances at the Baxter Theatre, once as Eugene Mathews' opening act and once as a featured artist at Real Art Wednesdays. Some of his topics include being a young at heart father but fast approaching 40 father, trying to give his kids a childhood better than the one he had and other more risque topics. His work as a podcast hope shines through on stage when he does crowd interaction but for Ryan, it's the telling of the story which is most important. Keep an eye on Mr Josephs, his stories are funny. Eugene Mathews As a regular performer at comedy shows and venues, Capetonian Eugene Mathews needs no introduction to audiences. He is also a sought after Master of Ceremonies and an active champion of LGBTQ issues. Described as “astute, shrewd and wickedly funny” his keen wit and sharp tongue will have his audience rolling about with laughter. Lerato Sokhulu This talented comedian, actor, MC, scriptwriter and voice over artist graduated with a BA in Live Performance at the ADFA, specialising in acting and producing. Her career success includes radio broadcasting and television content production for the likes of Gagasi FM, Vuma FM, Afternoon Express, Expresso and the Essence Festival and Durban Film Mart to name a few. Keith Mukhram Keith Mukhram is an up-and-coming stand-up comedian who uses a mixture of puns and witty one liners to convey his mishaps as a single guy in the mother city. He has performed on most of the stages Cape Town has to offer and was a regular feature at Cape Town Comedy Club. Be careful though, Keith will have you laughing even when you shouldn't be. Yaaseen Barnes Stand-up comedian Yaaseen Barnes from Athlone is known as the ‘prince of one-liners’. Describing his comedy routine Barnes says “I think funny thoughts and tell them to people”. Back in 2013 he fame first in the Jokers Comedy Championship and since then he has performed at the Jive Funny Festival alongside Trevor Noha, Marc Lottering and Nik Rabinowitz. He also won the Savannah Newcomer of the Year award in 2015. He is now a regular on platforms like Comedy Central, Grahamstown and the Cape Town Comedy Club. He has also written material for Stuart Taylar, opened for Riaad Moosa at the Comedy Central Festival, and shared a stage with Casper de Vries and Deep Fried Man. Barnes also sings and believes in another life he was a rock star. VUVU KUMALO Friday 28 May Cape Town Diva Vuvu Kumalo, also known as the Queen of Disco, enjoys doing tributes to her favourite divas. Her powerful, soulful voice is perfect for covering songs from her favourite artist, Tina Turner. “I’m a Tina Turner kinda girl. My shows are also based around my crush on Tina Turner.” She once shared a stage with R&B and pop singer, Sybil, and toured Spain with tribute shows for Donna Summer, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner and Bettie Wright. Local artists she has worked alongside The Voice season 2 winner Craig Lucas, SA Idols winner Paxton, Salome, Karin Kortje, Sasha-Lee, Jody Williams, Crushanda Forbes, Chad Saaiman and Loukmaan Adams. ROBIN PIETERS Saturday 29 May Professionally trained vocalist Robin Pieters has performed on big stages with international stars such as Tevin Campbell, Tamia, Robin S, Cece Peniston, Sybil, Peaches & Herb and All 4 One. Locally, Pieters has performed alongside many South African artists such as Lira, Kurt Darren, Loyiso Bala, AKA, Black Coffee, Emo Adams amongst many others. Robin’s work reflects the inspiration he finds in past experiences, day to day life, words and people that inspire his foundation in spirituality, the power of positive thinking, the drive to achieve and the belief that nothing is impossible.
