Capegate turned Black Friday green this year with an innovative and eco-friendly initiative. On Friday, 29 November 2024, the first 500 shoppers at Capegate received free shopping bags crafted from the centre’s repurposed promotional banners, showcasing a creative and impactful approach to reducing single-use plastics.
This thoughtful endeavour reflects Capegate’s commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness. By transforming previously used event banners into durable, reusable shopping bags, the centre is not only giving back to its loyal patrons but also contributing to reducing waste in landfills.
“Our goal was to find a meaningful way to celebrate Black Friday while staying true to our environmental values,” says Zoë Enslin, Marketing Manager at Capegate. “These bags are more than just a giveaway — they’re a statement about the power of small actions to create significant change. We hope this initiative inspires others to think creatively about reusing materials in their everyday lives.”
This initiative is perfectly timed for the year’s busiest shopping day, encouraging shoppers to adopt sustainable habits while enjoying the excitement of Black Friday. Capegate’s decision to upcycle their banners into shopping bags is a prime example of how retail centres can contribute to broader environmental efforts.
The bags not only serve as a practical shopping companion but also as a symbol of the centre’s dedication to innovation and eco-consciousness. By opting to repurpose materials that might otherwise be discarded, Capegate is leading by example in the fight against single-use plastics.
Community at the Core
Located in the heart of Cape Town’s southern suburbs, Capegate has long been a cornerstone of the local community, serving as more than just a retail destination. By embracing a community-centred approach, Capegate actively engages with residents, businesses, and organisations to create meaningful connections and lasting impacts. Its innovative initiatives, such as the environmentally friendly Black Friday shopping bags, demonstrate a deep commitment to improving the lives of those it serves while addressing global challenges like sustainability.
Capegate’s ongoing dedication to social responsibility is evident in its collaborative efforts to work towards a greener, more inclusive environment. From supporting local artisans and hosting community-driven events to investing in eco-conscious projects, Capegate consistently puts people and the planet at the forefront of its vision. Through these actions, the centre continues to enhance its reputation as a trusted community partner and a contributor to sustainable innovation, ensuring that its impact extends far beyond the shopping aisles.
