A dedicated new space strengthens the spirit of giving this festive season
Cavendish Square marked a meaningful moment on Saturday 13 December when it handed over an entire store to Gift of the Givers, creating a donation centre for the organisation in the Cape’s southern suburbs. With challenges such as unemployment, poverty and hunger affecting so many South Africans, this initiative reflects Cavendish Square’s commitment to social upliftment and offers the public an accessible way to contribute to this organization that does much needed work across the country.
A New Home for Giving
Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, founder and chairman of Gift of the Givers, officially opened the donation centre to an atmosphere filled with warmth and community spirit. The mall’s “Click & Collect” site on P1 has been transformed into a convenient drop-off centre, allowing visitors to donate 5L bottled water to assist with the current water crisis along the Garden Route and non-perishable goods throughout the festive period and beyond. The centre has also introduced a “Back a Buddy” QR code encouraging ongoing monthly support of R50, giving people a simple way to assist the organisation’s work long after the holidays.
This space has now provided Gift of the Givers with a convenient base from which to collect and distribute donations in the Western Cape. While the focus is on bottled water and food donations over the festive season, the projects will evolve according to needs, with a focus to school supplies in January. The centre will also serve as a major collection point during future crises such as floods or fires.
Driving Community Support
With so many people wanting to give back over the festive season, the opening has created an easy path for shoppers to contribute to urgent needs while going about their regular visits to Cavendish Square. Furthermore, this collaboration has laid the foundation for a long-term community effort that can adapt with the seasons and respond to the needs of the moment.
