GrandWest and WESSA assist school Eco-Clubs to recycle waste into fashion
Young fashionistas from Riverton Primary School and from Elswood and Bellville South High Schools, were greeted with applause as they sashayed down a ramp wearing ‘trash’.
The learners are members of an Eco-Club that has been sponsored by GrandWest and the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) for the past three years.
Each of the young designers was inspired to show fellow pupils and teachers how everyday waste can be creatively purposed instead of sending it to landfill sites. The theme for the activation was #BeatPlasticPollution for World Environment Month 2025, and the youngsters were all hosted at Riverton Primary School in Bishop Lavis.
The partnership is run nationally through WESSA and Sun International. On the day GrandWest provided all the youngsters with snacks and giveaways.
Mervyn Naidoo, General Manager of GrandWest said, “These learners have done us proud. Through their creativity we have all been made aware of how senselessly society disposes of waste. It is critical that each and every person learns to recycle.”
WESSA senior project manager Nomfundo Ndlovu said, “With our educational programmes, WESSA hopes to inspire the next generation to advocate and act for a healthy planet they are proud of.”
WESSA is a South African environmental NGO that works to promote environmental stewardship and conservation through various initiatives and programmes. It was established in 1926 to create awareness and provide platforms for people to act and get involved in solving environmental issues.
