Do you have a bra at the back of your cupboard that you never wear? Don’t bin it, donate it to the ILoveBoobies ‘bring a bra campaign’ … it could have a second life and provide some much-needed support to another woman.
What began as a once-off suggestion from an ILoveBoobies supporter has grown into an unexpectedly successful initiative. Now in its third year, the organisation’s ‘Gently Used Bra Campaign’ has collected over 20 000 bras, giving thousands of pre-loved bras a new purpose, while helping women access breast health screening.
That message is at the heart of ILoveBoobies’ work. The organisation provides free clinical breast health examinations to South African women who face financial, geographic or social barriers to accessing healthcare, while also educating communities about breast health and the importance of early detection.
To date, ILoveBoobies has screened more than 16 700 women, with 925 lives changed through early detection. For women who require further investigation, following their examination, SCP Radiology provides mammograms or ultrasounds. SCP contributes these imaging services free of charge as part of a wider circle of care for patients referred by ILoveBoobies.
The ‘Gently Used Bra Collection’ campaign runs from Women’s Month (August) through to the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Collection boxes are available at SCP Radiology branches across the Western Cape, where women are invited to donate clean, gently used bras in good condition.
The bras are then washed, sized, repackaged and given to women who attend ILoveBoobies breast health screenings. Each woman receives two bras as a practical gift and, in the words of ILoveBoobies, ‘a garment of dignity’.
This year the bra packs gifts have been extended to high school learners who participate in ILoveBoobies’ early detection education programme, run at several Cape Town high schools in collaboration with District 6 Clinic.
‘It is something we never expected to grow to this extent,” says Philippa Brinkmann of ILoveBoobies. ‘But as the number of our redistribution points has increased, we are actually starting to run low on bras. So, we are encouraging women to donate the bras they no longer use.’

The campaign taps into the growing interest in reuse and thrifting – but with a purpose. Rather than ending up in landfill, a bra that is still perfectly wearable can be passed on to someone who needs it, while being part of a much bigger message about women’s health.
‘Breast health is about much more than what happens inside a mammography room,’ says Madelein de Wet of SCP Radiology. ‘Our partnership with ILoveBoobies allows us to be part of a support initiative for women at different points along that journey, from education and screening to providing the imaging they may need. The bra campaign is another simple but tangible way of supporting women.’
There is also a practical reminder behind every screening. ILoveBoobies gives every woman who is screened a pair of socks as a reminder to regularly check her breasts – a small gift designed to keep the message of early detection going long after the screening is over.
The organisation’s message is simple: Early detection saves lives. And this October, women can help spread that message by doing something equally simple: Checking their underwear drawer or cupboard and donating a gently used bra that they no longer wear to ILoveBoobies.
