One third of new and used vehicles purchased this year were bought by women. With more and more women owning and driving cars in South Africa its increasingly important to ensure better safety on our roads. Women drivers need to be even more vigilant in order to avoid falling prey to criminals.
Sakina Ntuli, King Price Spokesperson says that something as simple as knowing how to change a tyre is a necessary skill for all drivers. In the below, Ntuli cites three more safety tips for women to consider when driving:
Driving at night or in high-risk areas requires extra vigilance
Avoid distractions such as driving while on your phone and keep your focus on the road. Ensure that you drive on a busy, well-lit road and always keep your doors locked. Illuminated roads, naturally, offer better visibility and are safer.
Regularly check your vehicle’s condition to prevent unexpected breakdowns and accidents
Ensure that your tyres are properly inflated and have sufficient tread depth. Don’t forget to check the spare tyre as well. Regularly check your car’s oil, coolant, and brake fluid levels, you can even stop at your nearest garage and ask them to check your fluids. Also make sure your windscreen wipers and washers are in good working condition.
In case of emergencies
Having the right tools and supplies in your car can make a huge difference in case of an emergency. Ensure that you at least have jumper cables which are essential for restarting a dead battery, a car jack and a spare tyre, as well as a reflective triangle to warn other drivers if you need to stop on the side of the road. Lastly, keep a car charger handy to ensure your phone is always charged.
