From the vibrant township of Mamelodi to the polished kitchens of Pretoria East, Zinhle Skosana is a testament to passion, perseverance and the power of following your dreams – one dish at a time. At just 25 years old, Skosana is already carving her name into South Africa’s culinary scene, with a story as rich and flavourful as the sauces she loves to make.
Skosana’s love for food didn’t start in a classroom or a fancy restaurant. It began at home, in her mother’s kitchen: “I spent a lot of time with my mom, cooking simple, home-cooked meals. That’s where the spark began.”
It was in those humble moments – peeling vegetables, stirring pots, and learning the rhythms of food – that her passion took root. In 2023, Skosana took the next bold step in her journey by enrolling at Capsicum, South Africa’s leading culinary institutions.
“What made me choose Capsicum was the fact that it’s internationally recognised and gave me real exposure to the industry.”
She graduated as a qualified professional chef from the school’s Pretoria campus in July 2024, a moment she describes as both emotional and empowering. While her time at Capsicum laid the groundwork, Skosana insists that the real lessons came in the kitchen trenches.
“Most of what I know now came from throwing myself into the real job. Being in this industry is not easy; it can be mentally and physically draining. But passion for food is what drives you.”
During her industry placement at Summit Grill and Skybar, she honed vital skills in time management, organisation and teamwork. The experience was intense, often pushing her out of her comfort zone. But it was worth it.
“There were moments of doubt, raw emotions, and tough days. But each challenge built my confidence and strength. I earned it, one hard day at a time.”
Her dedication during her work-integrated learning didn’t go unnoticed. Skosana was immediately hired after her placement, and today she’s proud to have moved into a leadership role.
“Now, I’m the one training students who were once like me. It’s a full-circle moment I’ll always be grateful for.”
As a Senior Head Chef, her role includes managing kitchen operations, training staff and students, resolving issues, and ensuring high culinary standards are met. And while she once hoped to take her skills overseas, she’s proving every day that excellence knows no borders.
Skosana balances a busy professional life with intention and routine. Her typical 24-hour day looks like this:
“In the morning, after I wake up I do some stretching and a little exercise, followed by a healthy breakfast like an omelette or oatmeal. Late morning I may have a snack of fruit, handle urgent tasks, and find time for a mindful lunch break and afternoons I focus on light work, emails and secondary tasks. In the evening I unwind with dinner, spend time with the family, and either indulge in one of my hobbies, or dome some household chores.”
And in between, she also runs private gigs under her brand, iChefYENU, showcasing her skills and personal touch to clients who want flavour and flair.
Skosana is particularly passionate about being a saucier, specialising in sauces that elevate a meal from good to unforgettable. If you peek into her fridge, you’ll always find eggs, onion, fresh garlic, cheese, butter and milk!
Her favourite kitchen tool? The spatula – versatile, reliable, and always in control. “Much like me,” she laughs.
When asked what her last meal on earth would be? There’s no hesitation: “Definitely my mom’s lamb curry with rice.”
Though she’s already achieved what many dream of, Skosana’s journey is just beginning. Her goal is to build a long-term career, remain a dependable leader, and eventually elevate her brand to even greater heights, locally and internationally.
Her story is one of humble beginnings, unwavering ambition and a relentless hunger to grow. Whether she’s leading a team, perfecting a sauce, or inspiring the next generation of chefs, one thing is clear: She’s not just cooking food, she’s crafting a legacy!
