The relentless pace of modern life is driving a shift in how people travel. A recent global report by Deloitte found that “professionals today are undoubtedly feeling the pressure of an ‘always on’ culture with as many as 77% of respondents having experienced the fatigue and exhaustion that comes with this”.
As the lines between work and rest blur, travellers are no longer looking for packed itineraries or high-energy escapes. Instead, they are searching for space – to think, to breathe, and to restore. This rising trend has been dubbed “stillness travel” – travel that prioritises rest, quiet, and reconnection with self.
In response, Steenberg Hotel & Spa in Cape Town’s Constantia Valley has introduced its new Sacred Sanctuary experience – a two-night wellness escape designed to offer guests more than luxury. It’s about meaningful pause. “We’re seeing a shift in what guests are asking for,” says Monique Pereira, Manager at Steenberg Spa. “They’re not just tired – they’re overstimulated.”

Inspired by the serenity of the estate, and the increasing need for disconnection from the digital world, this experience has been specially curated to provide a space for guests to reconnect with themselves in a meaningful and luxurious setting. “The Sacred Sanctuary package was born from a desire to offer guests a deeper sense of restoration,” says Pereira. “It offers a seamless blend of refined hospitality and intentional wellness – capturing the essence of what Steenberg stands for.”
At the heart of the experience is Steenberg’s new Thermal Suite that features a heated pool, ice bath, Nordic ice bucket shower and sauna. Designed to stimulate circulation, aid detoxification, ease tension and re-energize the body, it allows guests to prepare the body and mind before or after a treatment thereby enhancing the therapeutic impact.
The two-night package includes a 75-minute treatment of choice (massage, facial, or luxury manicure or pedicure), breakfast at Tryn, a tapas experience at Bistro Sixteen82, and unlimited access to the Thermal Suite. Guests are also invited to explore the estate’s gardens, vineyards, and bike trails, encouraging quiet connection with nature.
“Our guests are often people who are ‘always on’ – executives and professionals, amongst other,” says Pereira. “We created this experience with them in mind. It’s not indulgence for its own sake – it’s about healing from the constant demands of daily life.”
Therapists at Steenberg Spa are trained not only in physical technique, but also in holistic care – ensuring that every treatment is tailored to support long-term wellbeing. “Our focus is to create a safe, nurturing space – where guests feel seen, supported and unhurried,” she explains.

With the global wellness economy expected to reach nearly $9.0 trillion in 2028 (Global Wellness Institute), demand for this kind of experience is only expected to grow. However, Pereira explains that Sacred Sanctuary is about more than trends.
“We want our guests to leave with more than soft skin or relaxed muscles,” she says. “We want them to feel clear, grounded, and reconnected to themselves. That’s what true luxury means to us.”
