Tips on dog and cat shampoo
Dogs and cats need their own shampoo that’s made specifically for them, and there are many reasons for this, one main and rather obvious one is that they’re covered in fur… and we’re not.
Human shampoo is developed to keep the skin’s pH balance acidic, while pet shampoo is designed to do the opposite and keep their skin pH neutral. Your luxury haircare and bodywashes may leave your hair and skin feeling replenished, clean and moisturised but it will dry out or irritate your pet’s skin. Human hair and skincare products can cause an imbalance in dogs’ skin pH levels which could lead to skin and/or yeast infections. So much for giving pets a nice bath!
It’s easy to find a suitable dog or cat shampoo at an affordable price, and one that will give your furry best friend that ‘maybe they’re born with it’ look and feeling.
Dog and cat shampoos are engineered to be free from harsh ingredients or chemicals and therefore are kind to your animals.
So, what to look out for when shopping for a shampoo for pooch’s next spa day?
- Mild cleanser – with ingredients that are ideally free from soap, hypo-are allogenic and moisturising.
- A pH value that is especially made for a dog’s delicate skin (between 6.5 to 7.5), since a dog’s skin pH is more neutral than a human’s. A pet’s PH is about 7.5, and a human’s skin is about 5.5.
- Easy to rinse off and won’t leave an oily or unpleasant residue on your pet’s coat.
- Find a shampoo that is suited to your pet’s age, as younger pets will need a milder wash than adult dogs.
- And for those with bathing phobias or pet parents that doesn’t have or want to bath their pets in the bathtub at home, you can use Bob Martin Rinse Free Shampoo for dogs and cats.
Bob Martin’s range of grooming products offers something for all furry friends, from those who just need a good bath to pets with skin sensitivities. There’s even the Citronella Dog Shampoo that will help rebel bugs as well as give good hair days, and for cats there is Bob Martin Tick & Flea shampoo.
All Bob Martin shampoos contain a gentle pH balance and a non-irritant formulation that cleans and conditions the coat, leaving it soft and manageable.
Tip: Pets generally don’t need to be bathed more than once a month, (unless of course there was a rolled-in-something-yuck incident) as over washing will strip the natural oils from your pet’s coat and skin. These oils are important as they protect your pet’s condition and are what help keep their skin and fur in a healthy condition. Washing frequency also depends on the breed and condition of your pet and it is always best to ask your vet for recommendations.
We hope your pet enjoys his next bath… don’t forget the rubber ducky!
