Authentic validation directly affects the body. When we feel truly seen and heard, stress hormones like cortisol drop, while calming hormones such as oxytocin and serotonin rise. Breath deepens, muscles release tension, and the vagus nerve strengthens, improving heart–brain–gut communication. This biological reset moves the body out of survival mode, supports emotional balance, and allows healing. Feeling understood is not just emotional—it literally helps the nervous system regulate, recover, and restore resilience.
Scent and the nervous system- remembering is an action
When you inhale an essential oil, aromatic molecules reach the olfactory bulb within seconds, sending signals directly to the limbic system where emotions, memory, and stress responses are regulated. This fast pathway allows mood, breath, and emotional tone to shift almost immediately. Some molecules also enter the bloodstream via the lungs, supporting hormonal balance and calming nervous system signalling. Because smell develops early and bypasses conscious thinking, scent builds nervous system resilience by repeatedly guiding the body from stress into safety, strengthening regulation, adaptability, and emotional balance over time.

Sauna-icebath-sauna- a dance for the nervous systems
Moving from sauna to cold plunge and back to sauna trains the nervous system through controlled stress and recovery. Heat gently activates the sympathetic nervous system, increasing heart rate, circulation, and stress tolerance while releasing endorphins. The cold plunge creates an intense but brief stress response, followed by a strong parasympathetic rebound that calms the body via the vagus nerve. Returning to the sauna reinforces the nervous system’s ability to switch smoothly between activation and relaxation. This rhythmic contrast improves heart rate variability, emotional regulation, and resilience, teaching the body to stay calm, adaptable, and grounded under changing physical and emotional stress.
Hot-cold benefits for the mildly neuro-diverse
For mildly neurodiverse people, sauna–cold–sauna cycles can gently support nervous system regulation without relying on cognitive effort. Neurodivergent nervous systems often sit in higher baseline arousal or struggle with transitions. Heat provides predictable, soothing sensory input that helps discharge excess tension, while cold offers a clear, brief stimulus that sharpens focus and anchors awareness in the body. The return to heat reinforces safety after intensity. Repeating this pattern trains smoother transitions between activation and calm, improves interoception and emotional regulation, and builds confidence in the body’s ability to recover—supporting resilience, focus, and a greater sense of internal stability.

Regulation and Resilience- nervous system schooling
Regulation comes first, resilience grows from it—especially in trauma recovery and burnout. Trauma and chronic stress keep the nervous system stuck in survival, draining energy and focus. Gentle regulation, such as slow breathing with sound or scent, helps the body feel safe, lowers stress hormones, and restores rhythm. Resilience is built when the system meets small challenges and returns to calm without overwhelm. Over time, this repeated recovery reduces exhaustion, supports healing, and restores capacity. True recovery is not pushing harder, but teaching the nervous system how to come back to balance.

Insulin rest- the affect on the nervous system
Insulin rest reduces constant blood sugar spikes, lowering stress on the body and allowing the nervous system to shift from sympathetic “fight-or-flight” dominance toward parasympathetic “rest-and-digest” balance. When insulin has time to drop, inflammation decreases, energy stabilises, and the vagus nerve can function optimally, improving heart rate variability, digestion, and emotional regulation. Gentle insulin rest—through mindful meal timing, slower carbs, movement, breathing, and sleep—supports nervous system resilience. For trauma or burnout, this creates a safer internal environment, allowing the body to repair, restore metabolic balance, and improve emotional stability without triggering stress or fatigue.
About Belinda Spratt
Throughout my professional journey, I have deliberately chosen experiences that challenge me, expand my perspective, and deepen my understanding of people and places.
Travel was never just about seeing the world; it was about stepping beyond familiar borders and embracing environments that teach, inspire, and sometimes stretch me out of comfort.
I have fallen, dusted myself off and continued to learn.
These experiences have shaped the way I approach my work. I have learned to notice subtle cues, appreciate diverse perspectives, and create spaces where others feel seen, safe, and understood. My professional practice is informed not just by technical skill, but by the insight gained from navigating new cultures, environments, and human stories.
Every choice — every trip, every work environment — has refined my ability to connect, adapt, and bring depth, empathy, and intuition into the work I do today.
My line of work and travel has given me a relatable quality. Being more human is what I strive for every day.
I welcome the opportunity to connect with you.
