Not only is summer just around the corner but so is Heritage Day. What better reason than this to get your braai and yourself ready for the start of braai season? “Heritage Day has become affectionately known as braai day, and because of this has been celebrated with close friends and family,” comments Mario Correia, brand manager for household cleaning brand Chemico.
Being a nation that takes braaiing very seriously, with braai competitions not unheard of, there is no chance of anyone letting down the tradition. But, with winter only being over for a few weeks there may be a few things that need to be done beforehand to make sure that everything is ready to start the braai season off right.

Not wanting to let the home team down, Correia suggests the following activities to help get ready for what could be an amazing summer:
- Before anything is braaied, the braai needs to be cleaned. Chemico Extreme Paste Cleen with 3X extreme clean with ActiBeads can handle even the most stubborn grease leaving your braai ready for a new season of braaiing.
- Know where to get the best ingredients, including the meat and veggies for the braai. Having good food on the braai is very important.
- Practice makes perfect. It’s always good to know how to cook your meat, chicken and veggies perfectly on the braai. This is a great “reason” to practice your cooking skills before Heritage Day comes along.
- If you are braaiing on a charcoal braai, make sure that you have enough charcoal to see you through the braai, as well as firelighters. A wood braai needs ample wood available, and, if you are braaiing on a gas braai, make sure that the gas canister is full, connected, and ready to go.
- Spices make the meat. Get all your required spices ready for the big show and allow time for marinating to ensure that your meal is flavourful and that there is a flavour to suit every taste.
“Celebrating Heritage Day the South African way will most surely include having and enjoying a braai. Obviously with things being a little different this year and having to keep guest lists to a minimum, doesn’t mean that anything needs to change. Have a braai, enjoy your family and above all, always remember to keep safe,” explains Correia.
