Spring is almost here and along with its arrival come plans around the annual household spring clean. While traditionally spring cleaning has been focused on sprucing up our surroundings, people would do well to evaluate the other areas of life that can do with a review.
These areas could include, self-care, hobbies, and a review of finances and policies. Staying up to date with and adding something new to these areas of our lives will have positive effects on mental health and personal well-being.
Start with actual spring cleaning
Cleaning your environment is much easier than it seems, especially when approaching it step by step. As master organiser Marie Kondo advises, a five step approach to organising your home includes commitment to tidying up, imagining what you want your space to look like, discarding the old before anything else, tidying by category not room and adding asking yourself if the items you want to keep spark joy.
The benefits of living in a clean and tidy home include lowered stress levels, increased productivity, clearer thinking and peace of mind. Some researchers also suggest that the act of cleaning releases endorphins, which when released act as a natural pain killer and de-stressor.
Dusting off your insurance policies
Spring cleaning of insurance policies doesn’t have to be an exhausting task. In fact, keeping up with your insurance coverage and keeping them all in one location will most likely help to lessen anxiety.
The ability to do a digital audit of your affairs makes this much easier. It saves us from having to sort through mountains of documentation and make countless phone calls to brokers.
As Executive Head at Everything.Insure Mishaya Chettiar comments, “Until now, insurance was a complex and confusing subject to tackle for consumers who knew very little about the industry. But, Insurtech is empowering customers with a greater level of information at their fingertips before they make a purchasing decision by enabling consumers to compare the products, services, and features of different insurers and find the one that fits just right for their unique wants and needs.”
The Everything.Insure digital platform is unique in that it allows you to get everything covered in one place, online, in record time with no paperwork required. Spring clean your finances with the aim of increasing your awareness of what your insurance and other policies are covering.
Add new experiences in to your life
Hobbies, outings and exploring new places add a sense of fulfilment and adventure to our days. Think of the things you might have always wanted to do, but never have, or perhaps the flavours and foods you’ve never tried but have always wanted to.
This could also include learning a new skill, joining a running club or trying one new restaurant every second month or so during spring and summer. Examples include taking an affordable diving training course, learning to ride a bike or swim or trying fine dining for the first time. Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront will be holding a wine and meal pairing evening on 28 September and 26 October with novel dishes on the set menu to try for the first time.
Give your self-care a polish
When we think self-care the first ideas that might come to mind are facials or massages, but eating well will result in a boost to our wellbeing. During spring, a range of nutrient rich local produce comes into season and the benefits for taking advantage of this for our health are plentiful.
A first step towards eating healthier this spring is to reorganise your fridge and fill it with nutritional ingredients. Make sure that your veggie drawer is stocked with microgreens, which are tiny forms of young edible greens produced from herbs, vegetables and other plants. These tiny edible greens contain up to 40 times more nutrients than mature vegetables, says Rick Hein, MD of MicroThumbs. You may have seen microgreens as the flavourful decorative garnishes on top of your Instagram-worthy restaurant dishes, but they truly pack a nourishing punch and they are a superb addition to your daily diet.
“Microgreens are rich in incredible phytochemicals, an active compound found in the greens, which are able to reduce inflammation as well as bolster support for your immune system. So many of us lead busy and active lifestyles, so it’s incredible that you can get far more nutrients than the average vegetable just by consuming a small amount of microgreens. Just one bite of microgreens delivers a mighty dose of health benefits,” explains Hein. These edible plants can be used in so many different dishes, raw or cooked, so they make a versatile and affordable solution to assist you in boosting your nutrient intake.
Spring is a time of new beginnings in nature and can be the same in our personal lives too. One needs only to consider the benefits of self-care, financial awareness, new experiences and a clean and decluttered home.
The added positive impact on improved mental well-being and peace of mind should be considered when planning this year’s spring clean too.
