When it comes to outfitting your home with refrigeration appliances – whether it’s a fridge, a freezer, or both – making the right choice is crucial. These appliances are long-term investments that run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and they play a vital role in contributing to your health and well-being by properly preserving your food and beverages. With the multitude of options available in the market, it can be an overwhelming decision. To point us in the right direction, we spoke to Sicelo Champion from leading refrigeration and appliance manufacturer, Miele, to find out what the main considerations are that we should think about before making our final purchase decision:
- Size and capacity:The first step in selecting the right refrigerator is determining the size and capacity that suits your needs. Consider your household size, eating habits, and available space in your kitchen. Says Sicelo: “The size and capacity of your fridge and freezer are crucial to accommodate storage needs, prevent overcrowding, maintain food freshness, and ensure energy efficiency. Choosing appropriately sized appliances enhances convenience, flexibility, and overall kitchen functionality, aligning with your household’s requirements and lifestyle.”
- Energy efficiency:Energy efficiency is a crucial consideration notes Sicelo: “Choosing energy-efficient fridge and freezer models is crucial for reducing utility bills, minimising environmental impact, and supporting renewable energy initiatives like solar power, and to accommodate new power initiatives such as load sharing. Energy-efficient appliances consume less electricity, helping to save money, conserve resources, and mitigate the effects of power shortages. Miele’s refrigeration appliances for example, typically boast high energy efficiency ratings in the EU energy label system. Many of their models achieve A++ or even A+++ ratings, indicating superior energy efficiency and lower electricity consumption. Miele integrates advanced features like precise temperature control and innovative insulation technologies to optimise energy usage, offering environmentally friendly and cost-effective refrigeration solutions.”
- Configuration and features:Refrigerators come in various configurations, including top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side, under-counter, and French door. Each configuration offers different advantages in terms of accessibility and storage organisation. Consider your preferences and lifestyle when choosing between these options. Additionally, Sicelo advises that you pay attention to features such as adjustable shelves, humidity-controlled drawers, and interior LED lighting, other special features such as SoftClose and NoFrost technology, which can enhance convenience and functionality.
- Temperature control and preservation:The primary function of a refrigerator is to keep your food fresh for as long as possible. Look for models with precise temperature control mechanisms that maintain consistent temperatures throughout the appliance. Sicelo notes that Miele’s DailyFresh and PefectFresh Active are two great examples of this kind of technology: “With DailyFresh, the spacious drawers in the fridge offer space for a lot of fresh food. An optimum level of moisture is kept within the drawer. This results in fruit and vegetables staying fresh for up to 2 times longer. Selected models have an ExtraCool drawer in which the temperature is lower than in the rest of the refrigerator, making it the ideal place to store meat, fish and dairy products. Miele’s PerfectFresh Active freshness system ensures that every 90 minutes and whenever the door is opened, a fine water mist is sprayed into the drawer. This creates a gentle layer of moisture on your food and keeps the air humidity perfect at all times – regardless of how full the refrigerator is.”
- Durability and reliability:Investing in a high-quality refrigerator is essential to avoid frequent repairs and premature replacement. Research reputable brands are known for their reliability and durability. Read customer reviews and ratings to gauge the performance and longevity of different models. Additionally, consider factors such as warranty coverage and after-sales support when evaluating the overall value proposition of a refrigerator. Sicelo notes that by choosing a trusted brand, you are choosing peace of mind: “Miele for example, has been manufacturing high-end appliances for over 125 years and has earned its reputation as a trusted and aspirational brand. It has achieved this by offering best-in-market after-sales service, state-of-the-art technology and design, and of course, best-in-class durability. All of its appliances are designed, manufactured, and tested to last for a minimum of 20 years’ worth of use.”
- Design and aesthetics:While functionality is paramount, the aesthetic appeal of your refrigerator also matters, especially these days when the kitchen often forms part of an open-plan living space layout. Says Sicelo: “Choose a design that complements your kitchen decor and reflects your personal sense of style. You will also need to decide whether you would prefer an integrated or standalone refrigeration appliance. Integrated models blend seamlessly with cabinetry for a cohesive look, ideal for modern, minimalist designs. Standalone units offer versatility and can serve as focal points, adding visual interest and complementing various kitchen styles with their distinctive appearance.”
Sicelo concludes: “Investing in refrigeration for your home requires careful consideration of various factors, including size, energy efficiency, configuration, features, temperature control, durability, design, and budget. By prioritising your needs and preferences and conducting thorough research, you can make an informed decision that meets your requirements and enhances your overall kitchen experience.”
